Merdecca to her

This is a very good article from a younger generation and a great granddaughter of Tunku Abdul Rahman. A very well expressed opinion of how all Malaysians should be treated.

IF THIS IS THE VOICE OF YOUR YOUNGER GENERATION IN MALAYSIA , YOU WILL BE BLESSED.

Sharyn completed her Diploma in Advertising from Taylor's College, and then left motherland to pursue her BA degree majoring in Media Studies and Anthropology at Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand. While waiting for her graduation in May 08, she interned briefly at M&C Saatchi Wellington, a global advertising firm. Upon returning to Malaysia, jobless and relieved of rent payments, Sharyn stumbled upon Wild Asia through The Star which sparked her interest to learn more about nature and environmental causes. Armed with a communications background, Sharyn works on the Wild Asia website and editorial, translating geek terms into laymen language, easily accessed and understood by visitors regardless of their backgrounds, be it scientific, business, the arts or just plain interested.
By The Tunku's Great Granddaughter

This is a great piece. She has all the qualities of her great grandfather. Tunku has reason to be proud of her!

Tunku Abdul Rahman's great granddaughter

Sharyn Lisa Shufiyan, 24, Conservationist

Both my parents are Malay. My mum's heritage includes Chinese, Thai and Arab, while my dad is Minangkabau. Due to my skin colour, I am often mistaken for a Chinese.

I'm happy that I don't have the typical Malay look but I do get annoyed when people call me Ah Moi or ask me straight up "Are you Chinese or Malay"

Like, why does it matter? Before I used to answer "Malay" but now I'm trying to consciously answer Malaysian instead.

There's this incident from primary school that I remember till today. Someone told me that I will be called last during Judgement Day because I don't have a Muslim name. Of course, I was scared then but now that I'm older, I realise that a name is just a name. It doesn't define you as a good or bad person and there is definitely no such thing as a Muslim name. You can be named Rashid or Ali and still be a Christian.

I've heard of the 1Malaysia concept, but I think we don't need to be told to be united. We've come such a long way that it should already be embedded in our hearts and minds that we are united. Unfortunately, you can still see racial discrimination and polarisation. There is still this ethno-centric view that the Malays are the dominant group and their rights must be protected, and non Malays are forever the outsiders.

For the concept to succeed, I think the government should stop with the race politics. It's tiring, really. We grew up with application forms asking us to tick our race. We should stop painting a negative image of the other races, stop thinking about 'us' and 'them' and focus on 'we', 'our' and 'Malaysians'.

No one should be made uncomfortable in their own home. A dear Chinese friend of mine said to me once, "I don't feel patriotic because I am not made to feel like Malaysia is my home, and I don't feel an affinity to China because I have never lived there.

I know some baby Nyonya friends who can trace their lineage back hundreds of years. I'm a fourth generation Malaysian. If I am Bumiputra, why can't they be, too? Clearly I have issues with the term.

I think the main reason why we still can't achieve total unity is because of this 'Malay rights' concept. I'd rather 'Malay rights' be replaced by human rights. So unless we get rid of this Bumiputra status, or reform our views and policies on rights, we will never achieve unity.

For my merdeka wish, I'd like for Malaysians to have more voice, to be respected and heard. I wish that the government would uphold the true essence of parliamentary democracy. I wish for the people to no longer fear and discriminate against each other, to see that we are one and the same.

I wish that Malaysia would truly live up to the tourism spin of Malaysia truly Asia. Malaysians to lead - whatever their ethnic background. Only ONE NATIONALITY MALAYSIAN. No Malays, No Chinese, No Indians - ONLY MALAYSIANS. Choose whatever religion one is comfortable with.

MERDEKA

The whole abstract in blue above is taken from a note tagged on me in Facebook.

Written by the great granddaughter of Tunku Abdul Rahman.

Feeling the need to put some thoughts on it?

Really, just because of my skin colour people thought I am Bumiputra.

Just because of my name people solely see me as Chinese.

Hello, I am both.

Even if I am either one, I am still a Malaysia.

And I am proud that people see me as all kind of races :)

I was once even mistaken as Thai and Vietnamese.

No matter where you are, it's equality.

It should bring harmony, but yet it destroys peace.

Sort of feelings

Has anyone of you been in an almost-relationship?

Well explained and as weird as the name itself,

it creates awkward situation.

I have been in one,

and phew how glad I am that it is the one and only.

This was a few years ago before I was in a stable relationship.

I was single and I did not mind hanging out with guys,

like seriously guys only.

So here was how terrible is an almost-relationship,

which I warn you not to try if you lack trust and confidence.

There was this guy who I chat with quite frequently,

and one day he asked me out fml.

Being adventurous as I am always,

I agreed without second thought.

We had casual walks, casual talks but not at casual time.

Usually we go for walks after 12am, in the dark cold nights.

You get what I mean wtf.

So one there, climax, he said he sort of like me.

wtf sort of??

okay fine so I was also sort of into him,

or maybe a little more than he was into me fml.

When two people like each other, love blossoms right?

Right??

But it did not happen, cause we only sort of like each other.

We lost contact after the confession,

none of us want to be in an actual relationship.

Until we both found ourselves in stable relationship afterwards.

Now it gets super awkward when we meet, when we talk.

No proper hello, no proper goodbye.

It just started in a snap and ended in a blink.

That sort of feelings, where did it go?

Of Ichthyosis vulgaris and me

Let's start this whole new story of me, and my skin.

It all started when I was a young baby at few months old. Being the first child in the family, my Mum was not experienced taking care of a child. She bathe me using adult soap, which my Dad later blamed her for my skin condition. However, later on we found out that it's a kind of disease I inherit from my family. My Dad has this Ichthyosis, I think which is kinda bad cause as a guy he doesn't really bother about his skin condition. Me and my second brother inherited this disease from my Dad. My youngest brother have perfect skin like my Mum. Add on to the case that my Mum used adult soap on me when I was a baby, my skin condition worsened. It was all dry and scaly. I went to hospitals, government and private. Spent whole lots on consultant fee and medication. My uncles and my Dad's friends would bring all kinds of creams from overseas, not available in Malaysia for me to try on. I used almost all the lotions in the Malaysia market, from the cheap stuffs to the most expensive ones. From skin moisturizing to skin repair. Up till now, I have not found the perfect one. When I was 10 years old, my family went on a trip to Miri, a small town back then in Sarawak. the weather was so warm and my skin condition got worst. There were rashes everywhere, I had to stay in a air conditioned room whole day. I had blisters all over my body as well. Dad took me to a skin specialist and I had my blood sample taken. Ya, it was that bad until they have to examine my blood to find the best cure. The doctor gave me a cream but it was only temporary relieve. After we got back to Kuching, I went to see skin specialist and go for regular check up every 3 months, until I was in form 4. I was given sleeping pills because during those school days I can only sleep with them when rashes appeared. I was so shy when I was in primary school that I wore those ballet socks whenever I go out, even though I have never took ballet. In secondary school, I started to accept the fact that I am different. Whenever people ask bout my skin, I tell them the truth. Before that, I always avoided the question. When I was in form 5, I learnt that my aunts from my Mum's side also have the same problem. Making things worst because now I know I inherited it from both sides of my parents. There was once during a visit to the skin specialist that a trainee doctor took the pictures of my palms. Indeed my palms are different. The lines are obvious and they wrinkle like an elderly women since I was 7 or 8. My feet are really sensitive. If the floor is dirty, rashes will form within hours. My brother face the same problem, there was once he was sensitive to his own sweat. When he was in early secondary school, his rashes were so bad that he had to wear long sleeves all day even in Malaysia tropical weather. Up till now, I am still looking for the best cure for my skin. However, they said this disease get better when we are older, but there is no cure. So far St.Ives intensive healing serves me good. When lady gaga said she cannot survive without heels and fake eye lashes, I can't without lotion. I had been trained to apply them after bath. Everyday for as long as I live. If I go travelling and forgotten them, I go miserable. And I will stop at whatever shop to grab any lotion. When you see those scaly skin, I am sure it reminds you of snake or crocodile. It is in fact called the crocodile skin disease at times. I used to be teased by boys and I thought I will never find a guy who would date a girl with scaly skin. I envy those with smooth silky skin, like my youngest brother. Why me, the only girl yet having the worst skin condition in the family? I used to wonder but time flies. Me and my younger brother have this skin changing period every once in a month like snakes, seriously. That is when we scrub our body like hell. Or else you can write on our skin. It felt so shitty that I need to deal with the painful menstruation and skin changing every once in a month, but I got used to it. During the good times, I do wear shorts. But other time, I go myself all covered with long pants and cardigans. The thing is, Ichthyosis is not like other dry skin. If any of you thinking applying petroleum jelly all over your skin makes it super duper oily and greasy, it is actually making the skin dryer for us suffering from Ichthyosis. Any of you readers out there facing the same disease, you are so welcome to suggest any treatments. Since till now none of the commercial brands really works, most people with Ichthyosis make our own lotion. I do when I have time, and it works wonders. I never knew I was having Ichthyosis vulgaris. The doctors thought I was too young to know, some didn't even know what disease I was having because it is so rare. I did my own reasearch on it. My Dad did as well perhaps because we wanted a cure to those sleepless nights. The truth is, no matter how I try, it is in my blood, it is genetic. Just hopefully people understand, and please I am different but I wish not to be treated differently :)

Facts on Ichthyosis Vulgaris :

Ichthyosis vulgaris is a skin disorder causing dry, scaly skin. It is the most common form of ichthyosis,[1]:486 affecting around 1 in 250 people.[2] For this reason it is known as common ichthyosis. It is usually an autosomal dominant inherited disease (often associated with filaggrin), although a rare non-heritable version called acquired ichthyosis exists.[3]:560

The symptoms of the inherited form of ichthyosis vulgaris are not usually present at birth but generally develop between 3 months and 5 years of age.[4][5] The symptoms will often improve with age, although they may grow more severe again in old age.[6]

The condition is not life-threatening; the impact on the patient, if it's a mild case, is generally restricted to mild itching and the social impact of having skin with an unusual appearance. People afflicted with mild cases have symptoms that include scaly patches on the shins, fine white scales on the forearms and upper arms, and rough palms. People with the mildest cases have no symptoms other than faint, tell-tale "mosaic lines" between the Achilles tendons and the calf muscles.

Severe cases, although rare, do exist. Severe cases entail the build up of scales everywhere, with areas of the body that have a concentration of sweat glands being least affected. Areas where the skin rubs against each other, such as the armpits, the groin, and the "folded" areas of the elbow and knees, are less affected. When the build up of scales is bad, the person with a severe case suffers from "prickly itch" when he or she needs to sweat but cannot because of the scales. Various topical treatments are available to "exfoliate" the scales. These include lotions that contain alpha-hydroxy acids.

Ichthyosis vulgaris is one of the most common genetic disorders caused by a single gene.[4] The disorder is believed to be caused by mutations to the gene encoding profilaggrin (a protein which is converted to filaggrin which plays a vital role in the structure of the skin).[8] Around 10% of the population have some detrimental mutations to the profilaggrin gene that is also linked to atopic dermatitis (another skin disorder that is often present with ichthyosis vulgaris).[5] The exact mutation is only known for some cases of ichthyosis vulgaris.[4]
It is generally considered to be an autosomal dominant condition, i.e., a single genetic mutation causes the disease and an affected person has a 50% chance of passing the condition on to their child. There is some research indicating it may be semi-dominant. This means that a single mutation would cause a mild case of ichthyosis vulgaris and mutations to both copies of the gene would produce a more severe case.[8]

Wanna see some photos on Ichthyosis? Not for the weak hearted.
My skin was once like that, it still gets there sometimes but I learned to control.
These are all the most common type of Ichthyosis, called Ichthyosis vulgaris. If you are to search on google images, you would totally freak out cause there are other types which occurs 1-3 in millions and are much more scary.

if we ever meet again

I know I had been very lazy.

My posts had been videos or just words.

Without any interesting vocabs or pictures.

But all those explain my situation right now.

Please give me more time :)

What's somebody like you, doin in a place like this?
Say, did you come alone, or did you bring all your friends?
Say, what's your name, what you drinking
I think I know what you're thinking
Baby what's your sign, tell me yours I'll tell you mine
Say, what's somebody like you doing in a place like this?
(1, 2, 3, 4)

CHORUS:
I'll never be the same - if we ever meet again
Won't let you get away - said if we ever meet again
This free fall's, got me so
Kiss me all night don't ever let me go
I'll never be the same
If we ever meet again

Say if we ever meet again

Do you come here much? I swear I've seen your face before (before, yeah)
Hope you don't see me blush, but I can't help but want you more, more
Baby tell me what's your story
I ain't shy, don't you worry
I'm flirtin with my eyes, wanna leave with you tonight
So do you come here much, I gotta see your face some more, some more

Cuz baby

CHORUS:
I'll never be the same - if we ever meet again
Won't let you get away - said if we ever meet again
This free fall's, got me so
Kiss me all night don't ever let me go
I'll never be the same
If we ever meet again

If we ever meet again
I'll have so much more to say (if we ever meet again)

If we ever meet again
I won't let you go away (said if we ever meet again)

If we ever ever meet again
I'll have so much more to say (say if we ever meet again)

If we ever ever meet again
I won't let you go away

CHORUS:
I'll never be the same - if we ever meet again
Won't let you get away - said if we ever meet again
This free fall's, got me so
Kiss me all night don't ever let me go
I'll never be the same
If we ever meet again

I'll never be the same - if we ever meet again
Won't let you get away - said if we ever meet again
This free fall's, got me so
Kiss me all night, don't ever let me go
I'll never be the same
If we ever meet again

Title : U got me
Artist : Isis
Album : Inter groove

Lai krung tee tur tum jaochoo tung tung tee dern yoo gup chun
Over and over again you act like a playboy, even though you’re walking with me
Dtong hun mong kon eun dtong yim hai kon eun yahng nun
You gotta check out other people, gotta smile at other people like that

Oh whoa…meu tur gor jup tee meu chun
Oh whoa…your hand holding mine
Dtae dtah tur aep mong krai kon nun
But your eyes secretly looking at those others
Gor chun doo yoo dtae diao tur dtong dohn suk krung no whoa
And I watch, for fear you might dump me some time

Kon eun nahruk chun gor roo dtae yahk bork tur ao wai
Other girls are cute, I know but I want to remind you
Wah kon tee tur ruk yoo dtrong nee
That the person you love is right here
Kae hun mah gor jur mai hen dtong pbai mong tee nai ha oh ho
Just turn and you’ll find her, I don’t see why you have to go looking anywhere, hah oh ho

Mee chun laeo yung ja monghah krai eek
You have me and you still look for others
Mee chun laeo tur ja pbai son krai eek
You have me and you’re still interested in others
Roo wah tur kae mong gor por ja kao jai bahng tee gor kit mahk pbai
I know that you just look, but that’s enough to understand, sometimes I think too much
Glua wah chun ja mai dee meuan krai krai
I’m afraid that I’m not as good as the others
Glua wah ruk rao tee mee nun jahng pbai
I’m afraid that our love that we have is fading away
Teung yung ngai gor mee dtae tur nai hua jai
Even though I have only you in my heart
Lae chun gor mai groht kae ahrom noy jai
And I’m not angry, just a little hurt

Pror chun mee tur pben kon ruk
Because I have you as my lover
Kon diao nai jai mun loey huang
Alone in my heart, jealous
Gor heung lae huang pror chun mee piang kae tur tao nun
I’m possessive and worries because I have only you alone

(*, **, **)

Mee chun laeo yung ja mong hah krai eek
You have me, and you still go looking for others

U got me… U got me…

Bahng tee gor kit mahk mai glua wah chun ja mai dee meuan krai krai
Sometimes I think too much, afraid that I’m not as good as the others

U got me… U got me…

Teung yung ngai gor mee kae tur nai hua jai
Even though I have only you in my heart
Lae chun gor mai dai groht kae ahrom noy jai
And I can’t be angry, just a little hurt

if only you know.
that you are different.

How scary can Facebook be?

from http://sdow.semanticweb.org

Facebook saves...
...things that have been deleted. Be it your status update, a picture of you, drunk and unbecoming, or even after you've deactivated your account - they keep it after it's gone from your memory.

Facebook knows...
...where you've been. Whether you're stalking your ex, checking up on an old friend or taking a look at someone's farm; Facebook keeps a log of clicks of everything you've, well, clicked on.

Facebook knows...
...if you have friends. It can find out the frequency with which you visit someone's profile and use this data to judge who your buddies are. How to tell this is true? Search results for friends are not listed alphabetically but according to how often you interact with them.

Facebook is your...
...psychologist. Instead of doing focus groups and sampling for its new features, the social networking site carries out psychologist tests for new features on you. To boot, eyeball tracking tells them what you're looking at.

Facebook is a...
...mail thief. It can retrieve any message you've sent as all of them are stored in its servants. In fact, they'll keep them long after you've trashed the trash.

The Orphans-dream

It was not so clear but the men, who came a while ago asking permission to go to the other side of the town, came running saying, “they were there”. That was when I knew it was something I was looking forward to. They demanded us to follow them uphill. They said the children; the orphans are trapped in the house.

………….

Long time ago I have heard them calling for help but only to see no one around. I ran back asking for help but no one believed me. The house, the orphanage was abundant years ago. After I told my story, I was never allowed to play outside the gates. Dad left us soon before, no doubt Mum was strict on us. Until today a few men dressed in black coats came to us, the house at the edge of the village to ask about the orphanage. Mum kept us away but I heard her yelling, “stop disturbing our lives. Go find out yourself. We had enough these years”. Indeed, this was not the first time they came, perhaps when I was away for school.

………….

They came back with their face all pale and panting, as if they have seen ghost. Their shoes covered with dirt, like they ran miles. They said they need our help. I was already a teenage boy, keeping the darkest to myself. I followed. It was pass midnight; the moon is brightly shining above our heads when we climbed uphill. When I first place my sight on the orphanage after seven years, the lightning strikes and the wolves howled. The four of us looked at each other. I knew it was too ironic, it only happens in movies, I thought. We reached the house and the door was wide open, as if welcoming us. Looking at my furious face, Sir John explained that they had broken in earlier. I was in fact more than relief to hear that.

…………..

We decided to split up. It was the dumbest idea but I was naïve. This thing had been haunting me and all I want now is to get it out of my head. I never forget the boy who was standing beside the window, with the wood fire behind him, as if they were so near. That night I heard a howl, he was gone and I ran back crying. I had fever the whole week. Too afraid to let anyone know what happened, I sulked for a few months until the day my Dad passed. I told Mum what happened but she thought I was so depressed after Dad’s death that I start imagining stuffs.

…………….

I took out my candle and lighted it. Swayed it around but saw nothing. I walked further up to the kitchen, nothing. Then I saw this door below the stairs. Under the stairs, there is a small garden. I make my way nearer, I saw something sparkling. I came near to a pair of deep blue eyes. She quickly turned away when she saw my candle. I was stoned, wanting to scream but nothing came out. I feet were so heavy. I was there to witness her every movement. She called a few other girls who were sleeping beside her, she lead them into the room next to where they were sleeping and the door closed right after them.

……………

I felt a gush of wind and my candle when out. I was in total darkness but suddenly I heard noises from the room. Children’s laughter and voices. Curious of what was happening, I entered the room, not lighting my candle afraid I will scare another child, or should I say, ghost? The door knob was easier to turn than I expected. I looked into darkness, but hear voices. Without taking more steps and feeling sure nobody or nothing is beside me, I lighted up my candle again. Twice, I wondered where the wind came from a confined room. Only the third, I managed to light it up. The room was filled with children. The older reading to the younger and some younger ones chasing after one another around the huge room. With one running pass me. That was when I spotted the boy, sitting alone in front of the wood fire. Still look the same; he hasn’t grown much I thought, only to remember that I was not in my world.

…………..

I made my way to him, until a girl stopped me. I guess she is the eldest sister there. She placed her finger over her lips, demanding me to keep quiet. Then I followed her to a table full of bread and wine. I heard my name being called, once, twice. Should I run? Or should I stay to listen to her story? Will I ever get out of this room? Why does it felt so peaceful but still something amiss?

…………

Bel knocked on the door and came in with some Indian food. That was when my dream ended. I did not manage to find out what happened to the orphans. I did escape back to live, but feeling dizzy after the dream. I wanted to save the children, free their souls. But there is no way to get back to that dream. Whoever stayed in the dream, help them. Maybe it is true, maybe it is not, but dream makes reality. And dream, is, a game of mind.

Pardon my poor English, I wrote this within half an hour after I finished my Indian food :)

Headache

I apologize for my blog is so dead.

Having my final exam now.

Last paper on next Tuesday,

but I am just too exhausted to even on my laptop.

Totally screwed up my previous papers,

study like freaking hard, did group study,

but ending up crying when I was done with them.

How stupid was that.

And I do feel I am getting stupider, if there is such word.

Long holiday after my last paper,

will blog bout my long forgotten field trip,

though the semester has ended by then.

I am getting to bed, spent whole day sleeping.

Tomorrow will start studying again.

And btw, my brother entered UTP (check about me section) as well.

Taking Chemical Engineering.

I know it sounds cooler than mine,

but his complains bout orientation is enough to annoy me.

You will see us both blogging bout happenings in UTP soon enough.

Wish me luck for my last paper.

I terribly need it cause my hardworks and prayers didn't work so well.

Headache.

Sometimes I just couldn't be bothered as long as I pass my papers.

But that was not what I told the bf.

To grab the job opportunities for my course and in this industry,

you just got to be above average.
